DUDLEY, Mass. — A full studio of spin enthusiasts raised $2,700 for Northeast Opportunities for Wellness, Inc. (NOW) Saturday, Jan. 25, at the 3rd Annual Murphy Spin for NOW, held at The Fitness Studio in Dudley, Mass.
The event featured three hours of spinning by 36 people and five trainers, filling the Dudley studio to capacity. The fundraiser total exceeded last year’s event by $1,000 and will benefit scholarships for Northeastern Connecticut children to area athletic programs.
NOW Founder Allan Rawson, of Putnam, said the organization has been meeting with youth organizations regarding partnership in the scholarship program in the past few weeks and the concept has been well-received.
NOW is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing all children, regardless of financial resources, with equal opportunities to achieve and maintain youth wellness.
NOW’s “You Play. We Pay.” program offers scholarships to local children that cover up to 95 percent of the cost of participation in area athletics programs. NOW also provides fitness and nutrition resources to the athletic programs.
“It’s nice to see the same people back supporting the kids,” Rawson said.
The annual spin event was renamed this year for former Fitness Studio owner Kerri Murphy, who was a big supporter of NOW and recently died of cancer, said event organizer Earl Rosebrooks, of Thompson.
Rosebrooks and fellow Fitness Studio spin instructor Amy Williams, of Putnam, led the high intensity spin session. Williams said while it made for a hard workout, she and Rosebrooks mixed in fun, asking trivia questions and holding fitness challenges at the front of the studio. Williams said the studio was full of “fun energy.”
“Because it’s for the children, we want to make sure we bring in the fun of children,” Williams said.
Participants paid $40 to join the spin event and all of the proceeds were donated to NOW. Rosebrooks said participants also held their own fundraisers for the event and some were sponsored by family members and friends. Volunteers from the organization handed out water and snacks to the spinners throughout the event.
Rosebrooks said he was impressed by the “amazing turnout,” which topped the previous events and filled every spin bike in the studio. Local businesses also donated drawing prizes, which raised additional monies for the organization.
NOW operates athletic fields in Putnam and Canterbury and hosts soccer camps and clinics, football and cheerleading clinics and other sports events and clinics throughout the year.
NOW is currently identifying children that could benefit from the “You Play. We Pay.” scholarship program. For more information, visit NOWinMotion.org or call (888) 940-4669.
